In the Gutenberg Bible, the chapter of the Ecclesiastes (Old Testament) fills seven pages.
J'ai lu tous les livres ("I have read all the books”), whose title comes from
Brise Marine, an 1865 poem by Stéphane Mallarmé, consists of a proportional enlargement of these pages; the text states that everything is doomed to disappear.
In a meditation on the passage of time and the vanity of all human endeavors, it was reproduced using charcoal powder; once fixed, the text was covered with a second, unfixed layer of the same fragile and unstable pigment, forming a more or less dense coating. Each transfer of the frame will shake some of the powder loose, letting the text reappear and gradually revealing the timelessness of its contents.

J’ai lu tous les livres, dont le titre est issu de Brise marine (1865), un poème de Stéphane Mallarmé, reproduit l'intégralité des sept pages de l’Ecclésiaste (Ancien Testament) extraite du premier incunable de l’histoire : la Bible à quarante-deux lignes, dite B-42, imprimée par Gutenberg vers 1455.
Méditation sur le passage du temps et la vanité de toute entreprise humaine, le texte, qui rappelle que tout est voué à disparaître, a été reproduit à l’aide de poudre de fusain; une fois fixé, il a été recouvert de ce même pigment fragile et instable, constituant un voile plus ou moins dense, destiné à glisser. Chaque déplacement du cadre est en effet susceptible de faire chuter la poudre, laissant peu à peu réapparaître le texte et révélant ainsi progressivement l’intemporalité de son contenu.
