In the most ancient worlds, all mirrors were considered to be magic, endowed with a particular life force or mnesic capacity. In order to recover this lost transcendence, the artist manufactured his own mirror from scratch, taking care to ensure that it captured neither his nor anyone else’s refletion. He then placed the mirror in a drawer under lock and key.
In Japan, there is a sacred mirror, strictly hidden from view. Each new emperor looks at himself in this mirror just once, at the moment of his coronation. This piece offers the same opportunity to see oneself for the first time. Yet one might also choose not to open the drawer: this locked box contains the possibility of a timeless innocence, an eternal virginity.

Dans les premiers temps, tous les miroirs étaient magiques, dotés d’un pouvoir particulier, de vie, de mémoire ; pour retrouver cette transcendance perdue, l’artiste a argenté lui-même un miroir, en prenant soin à ce qu’il ne le reflète pas, ni personne, pendant le processus. Il l’a ensuite placé dans ce tiroir, puis fermé à clef.
Il existe au Japon un miroir sacré, caché aux yeux de tous, dans lequel chaque nouvel empereur se regarde une seule fois, à son intronisation. Maintenant cette occasion est aussi donnée à tout un chacun : de se voir pour la première fois. On peut aussi ne pas utiliser la clé: car l’intérieur de cette boîte recèle à jamais la possibilité d’une innocence, une virginité.
